NDC COMING ELECTIONS – COMPLETE BREAKDOWN OF GHANA’S RULING PARTY INTERNAL POLLS AND ROAD TO 2028

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana’s ruling party, has officially started its major reorganization and internal executive elections ahead of the 2028 General Elections.

The party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) after its meeting on August 4, 2026, released a comprehensive timetable that will run from September to December 2026, covering all levels from constituency to national.

This election is very important because the executives who will be elected will be the people to lead the NDC’s machinery to defend its government and prepare to secure what the party calls “an emphatic victory in the 2028 General Elections.”

1. BACKGROUND AND WHY THIS ELECTION MATTERS

The NDC after winning power needed to reorganize its grassroots. The current constituency, regional and national executives’ mandate is ending. According to the party’s constitution, the party must go through branch, constituency, regional and national elections to renew leadership.

The internal elections will also test the unity of the party. NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has said “The spirit of unity and collective purpose that has characterized our reorganization process will continue to strengthen the Party as we prepare to secure an emphatic victory in the 2028 General Elections.”

The party has also ended its push to remove Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa, with the leadership saying the departure of her two deputies is enough reset at the EC.

Filing Fee Controversy: The NDC has set GH¢100,000 as filing fee for National Chairman race. This is the highest fee in the party’s internal elections.

All payments must be made online via Mobile Money, Visa or Mastercard. Bank drafts are not accepted and fees are non-refundable. Analysts say this sets a financial bar for who can lead the party into 2028.

5. ROAD TO 2028 GENERAL ELECTIONS

The entire internal reorganization is to prepare for the 2028 Presidential and Parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7, 2028.

The NDC as ruling party will be defending its record. The new executives elected in December 2026 will have exactly 2 years to prepare, unite the party, resolve internal grievances, and build a campaign structure to face the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other parties.

Political analysts say the outcome of the December 19 National Congress will give a clear signal about who controls the party ahead of the 2028 flagbearer race, which is expected to be held in 2027.

6. WHAT MEMBERS SHOULD DO

If you are an NDC member and a delegate, make sure your membership card is valid, your branch is active, and you follow the guidelines from your constituency office. Avoid double nominations and ensure you meet the party’s constitutional requirements to avoid disqualification.

For now, constituency elections are ongoing. Regional and National will follow.

The NDC says it will ensure a free, fair, transparent and credible internal electoral process.
