BREAKING: Afenyo-Markin Reportedly Replaced By Kojo Oppong Nkrumah As Minority Leader? NPP Breaks Silence
Kasoa – There is growing tension within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following reports that the party is planning to replace the Minority Leader in Parliament, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin with former Information Minister and Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
The report, which went viral on social media on Tuesday and Wednesday, claimed that a decision had been taken by the leadership of the NPP and the camp of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to remove Afenyo-Markin as leader of the mighty Minority in Parliament.
The claim was first shared by US-based Ghanaian journalist Kevin Taylor, who in a Facebook post alleged that a decision had been reached to sack Afenyo-Markin. He wrote “Stay tuned” sparking massive debate online.
Within hours, the names of three top NPP MPs started circulating as possible replacements. According to sources, the three names are:
1. Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah – MP for Ofoase-Ayirebi, 43 years old, lawyer and former Minister for Information. He is seen as eloquent, ambitious and close to Dr. Bawumia.
2. Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh – MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, current Minority Chief Whip. A seasoned lawmaker with legal background.
3. Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye – MP for Bantama, former Minister for Works and Housing, who is reportedly being pushed by the powerful Ashanti Caucus in Parliament.
Out of the three, the name of Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has dominated the trends, with many online portals reporting that he has been selected as the new Minority Leader.
NPP REJECTS REPORT – “IT’S A LIE”
But in a sharp response, the New Patriotic Party has categorically rejected the reports and described them as false, malicious and aimed at creating confusion within the Minority Caucus.
Addressing a major press conference at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong, stated that the party has never held any meeting to discuss changing its parliamentary leadership.
“Let me state it categorically. The party has never had any meeting. The party has never thought about even deliberating to change the leadership in Parliament. We have not. So those who are busily peddling lies and trying to create this confusion among the leadership in Parliament and the mighty Minority caucus will not succeed,” Justin Kodua said.
He added that the current Minority leadership led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin continues to enjoy the full confidence and support of the party’s National Executives and will continue to lead the Minority in holding the NDC government accountable.
“We are overwhelmingly satisfied with the work being done by the leadership in Parliament, led by Osahen Afenyo-Markin, and we shall continue to give them that support that they need to make sure that together with our flagbearer and the party we win the elections in 2028,” he emphasized.
WHY THE RUMOUR?
Political analysts believe the rumour is not happening in a vacuum. Since the NPP lost the 2024 general elections and moved to the Minority side, there have been internal struggles over who should lead the party in Parliament.
Sources inside Parliament say some members of the Minority Caucus believe Afenyo-Markin’s style is too combative and confrontational, while others say he has been exceptionally brave in defending the NPP against what they describe as an overbearing Majority.
There is also the Bawumia factor. With Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia now the NPP flagbearer for Election 2028, there is lobbying within his camp about who should be his chief lieutenant in Parliament to coordinate his vision.
The Herald Ghana newspaper had earlier this year reported about a “palace coup” against Afenyo-Markin, mentioning the same three names – Annoh-Dompreh, Oppong Nkrumah and Asenso-Boakye as those positioning themselves to take over.
The Eastern Region bloc of NPP MPs is said to be split between Annoh-Dompreh and Oppong Nkrumah, while the Ashanti bloc is pushing for Asenso-Boakye.
WHO IS KOJO OPPONG NKRUMAH?
If the change were to happen, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah would be seen as a strategic choice. He is young, articulate, media-savvy, and has experience as a former Minister for Information where he was the face of government communication.
He is a lawyer, holds a strong educational background, and is respected across both sides of the House for his calm but firm debates. His Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency is in the Eastern Region, which balances the geographical spread since Afenyo-Markin is from the Central Region.
SOCIAL MEDIA REACTIONS
The news has divided Ghanaians. While some NPP supporters say they would welcome Oppong Nkrumah as a more diplomatic Minority Leader, others say this is not the time for the party to show disunity.
On Facebook and X, one user wrote: “Matter ends. NPP says no change.” Another commented: “Why does NPP need a press conference to deny this? Something is cooking.”
Kevin Taylor’s supporters insist that his prediction will still come to pass, as he has made similar bold predictions in the past that later materialized.
WHAT IS THE CURRENT STATUS?
As of today, Thursday October 29, 2026, the official position of the NPP is clear:
– Alexander Afenyo-Markin REMAINS the Minority Leader
– Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has NOT been appointed as Minority Leader
– No meeting has been held to replace the leadership
– The party says it is focused on its parliamentary primaries, not leadership changes
What to watch: Parliament resumes next week. All eyes will be on who sits on the front bench of the Minority side. Will it be Afenyo-Markin or will there be a surprise?
