Kasoa-Ofaakor Accident: Family Cries To IGP For Justice As Young Nurse Needs GH¢80,000 For Surgery After Losing Mother In Crash
A grieving family in Kasoa has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for justice over what they describe as police neglect and inaction following a fatal accident at Kasoa-Ofaakor Junction that claimed two lives and left a young registered nurse fighting for her life.
The family alleges that for nearly three weeks after the accident, officers at the Kasoa-Ofaakor District Police Command failed to update them on the investigation, failed to visit the survivor in hospital, and allowed the driver allegedly responsible to walk freely.
The survivor, Fatia Wichi, a 2023 graduate of Sunyani Nurses and Midwifery Training College, is currently on admission at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and urgently needs GH¢80,000 for surgery on her legs and hand, or risk permanent disability.
How The Accident Happened
According to the family and police reports, the tragic accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2026, at the Kasoa-Ofaakor Junction, a notorious accident-prone area on the Kasoa-Winneba highway.
A private Hyundai 4×4 vehicle allegedly hit a motorcycle carrying three people – two women and a male Okada rider – who were on their way to an unknown destination in the early morning.
The impact was so severe that two people died instantly – Happy Wichi, the mother of Fatia Wichi, and the motorcycle rider. Fatia Wichi, who was the third passenger on the motorcycle, survived but sustained critical injuries to both legs and one hand.
Speaking to Onua TV’s Kwame Kakraba at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Eric Atitso, an uncle of the deceased, narrated how the family first learned of the crash.
He said he received a strange call around 6:00 a.m. on the day of the accident from his niece Fatia’s phone number, only to be told by an unknown person that an accident had occurred at Kasoa-Ofaakor Junction and he should rush to the scene immediately.
“When I arrived at the scene, I saw the wreckage of the motorcycle and blood everywhere. I immediately went to the Kasoa-Ofaakor Police Station to formally report the incident and find out what happened to my relatives,” Mr. Atitso said.
Family’s Allegations Against Kasoa-Ofaakor Police
At the Kasoa-Ofaakor Police Station, Mr. Atitso said he was attended to by a Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) officer identified as Issaka Yakubu, who confirmed that two people had died in the accident and that a woman had survived but was in critical condition.
He was then directed to the mortuary, where he identified the body of his relative Happy Wichi – Fatia’s mother – along with that of the motorcycle rider.
However, the family’s frustration began when they asked about the driver of the Hyundai 4×4 vehicle.
According to Mr. Atitso, the officer told him to remain calm and pointed out a man from a distance identified as Samuel Darkora as the driver, but the driver appeared to be free and not in custody, despite the deaths and the severity of Fatia’s injuries.
He added that for three weeks after the accident, no officer from the Kasoa-Ofaakor District Police Command visited Fatia at the hospital or called the family to update them on the investigation.
“We are appealing directly to the Inspector-General of Police and to Onua TV and TV3 to help us seek justice. We are very sad about how the Kasoa-Ofaakor District Police is treating us, all because we do not have money to fight the case,” Mr. Atitso lamented.
“We do not have money to hire a lawyer, and we have already used our contributions to support Fatia Wichi’s treatment and we are totally broken. We are calling on the general public to help us get justice.”
The family further alleged that the vehicle involved belonged to the driver’s father, whom they described as a military officer, and appealed to the police leadership to ensure that the accident is investigated fairly and that any person found responsible is dealt with according to the law without fear or favour.
Fatia Wichi Cries For Help – Needs GH¢80,000 For Surgery
Fatia Wichi, who is currently on admission and cannot walk or even sit up on her own, spoke from her hospital bed in a heartbreaking interview.
“I am a registered nurse, I completed in the year 2023 at Sunyani Nurses and Midwifery Training College. I was involved in an accident, and I can’t walk or even rise to sit.
The doctor taking care of me said I have to pay GH¢80,000 before he will operate on my hand and legs, so I need support from individuals who are watching me,” she cried.
She is therefore appealing to President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, businessman Ibrahim Mahama, and the Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training College, as well as the general public, to come to her aid.
Her mother, Happy Wichi, who died in the accident, was reportedly accompanying her to an unknown location when the tragedy struck.
Police Finally Respond After Media Pressure
After the family’s petition and media coverage by Onua TV, the Central East Regional Police Command has finally taken action.
The Central East Regional Police Headquarters in Kasoa held an extensive administrative and investigative meeting on Monday, October 19, 2026, with stakeholders including the deceased’s family.
After the meeting, the Regional Commander formally instructed the MTTD officer in charge of the case at Kasoa Ofaakor, Issaka Yakubu, to go to the hospital.
Officer Yakubu, along with two other officers, was dispatched to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital to take the victim’s statement and properly document the case.
When contacted by Onua TV’s reporter, the police officer in charge of the accident case confirmed that the case was under investigation but declined to give further updates.
Call For Road Safety At Kasoa-Ofaakor Junction
Residents of Kasoa-Ofaakor have renewed calls for improved road safety measures at the Kasoa-Ofaakor Junction, which has recorded several fatal accidents in recent months.
They are calling for speed ramps, traffic lights, street lights, and police presence, especially in the early morning hours when many Okada riders ply the route.
