Kasoa High Tension Fire – Over 20 Shops Destroyed

Kasoa High Tension Fire – Over 20 Shops Destroyed
KASOA TODAY – OCTOBER 20, 2026 – COMPLETE NEWS ROUNDUP
Kasoa, the bustling commercial hub in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region, is today making headlines for four major stories ranging from fire disaster to justice appeals, traffic crisis, and security operations. Here is the detailed report.
1. MAJOR FIRE AT KASOA HIGH TENSION DESTROYS OVER 20 SHOPS – FIREFIGHTER COLLAPSES
A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed more than 20 container shops at Kasoa High Tension this morning, leaving traders counting huge losses running into thousands of Ghana Cedis.
According to eyewitnesses and preliminary reports from the Ghana National Fire Service, the fire started around 10:00 AM in a phone repair shop. A suspected electrical fault is believed to have triggered the blaze, which quickly spread to adjoining shops because of the close proximity of the containers and the presence of highly flammable materials like phone accessories, plastics, and electrical gadgets.
The situation became more chaotic when the Kasoa Fire Station was unable to respond immediately because their fire tender had broken down. This delay forced authorities to call for reinforcement from the Weija Fire Station, which is several kilometers away. By the time the Weija team arrived, the fire had already engulfed over 15 shops.
One firefighter reportedly collapsed while battling the intense blaze due to heat and smoke inhalation and was rushed to the Kasoa Polyclinic for emergency medical attention. His condition is said to be stable.
Tensions flared as some angry residents and traders, frustrated by the delayed response, allegedly pelted the responding fire engine with stones, damaging its windscreen. The incident has sparked a national conversation about the state of fire tenders in Kasoa and surrounding districts.
Nash Nyandey, the Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for Awutu Senya East, confirmed the incident and condemned the attack on firefighters. He attributed the scale of the disaster partly to the dangerous location of the shops directly beneath high-tension power lines. He announced that traders operating beneath the high-tension lines would be relocated to reduce risk.
Hon. Shadrach Boakye Yiadom, Assembly Member for the American Town Electoral Area, described the incident as unfortunate and appealed to the government and benevolent organizations to provide urgent assistance to the affected traders.
Authorities are expected to assess the full extent of damage today and determine support packages. Traders are appealing for government intervention as many of them took loans to stock their shops.
2. FAMILY OF KASOA ACCIDENT VICTIMS CRIES FOR JUSTICE – ACCUSES KASOA-OFAAKOR POLICE OF NEGLECT
In another emotional story, the family of victims involved in a recent accident at Kasoa-Ofaakor is crying for justice and accusing the Kasoa-Ofaakor District Police Command of neglect and abandonment.
Today, Tuesday, October 20, 2026, marks exactly three weeks since the accident occurred, yet according to the family, no officer from the Ofaakor Police has visited the victim at the hospital or called the family to update them on the investigation.
The main victim, identified as Fatia Wichi, a 2023 graduate of Sunyani Nurses and Midwifery College and a registered nurse, is currently on admission and cannot walk or even sit up by herself.
In a video interview with Onua TV, Fatia emotionally appealed for help: “I am a registered nurse, I completed in the year 2023 at Sunyani Nurses and Midwifery College. I was involved in an accident, and I can’t walk or even rise to sit. The doctor taking care of me said I have to pay GH¢80,000 before he will operate on my hand and legs, so I need support from individuals who are watching me.”
She is appealing to President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, businessman Ibrahim Mahama, and her alma mater Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training College to come to her aid.
Her family spokesperson added: “We are appealing directly to the Inspector-General of Police and to Onua TV/TV3 to help us seek justice. We are very sad about how the Kasoa-Ofaakor District Police is treating us, all because we do not have money to fight the case. We do not have money to hire a lawyer, and we have already used our contributions to support Fatia’s treatment and we are totally broken.”
When Onua TV contacted the police officer in charge of the case, he confirmed that the case was under investigation but declined to give further updates.
However, following a stakeholder meeting at the Central East Regional Police Headquarters in Kasoa on Monday, October 19, the Regional Commander formally instructed the MTTD officer in charge, Issaka Yakubu, along with two other officers, to go to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital to take the victim’s statement. The public is watching to see if justice will be served.
3. HEAVY TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK ON KASOA-MALLAM STRETCH DUE TO POTHOLES AT MALLAM JUNCTION
Commuters on the ever-busy Kasoa-Mallam Highway are enduring hellish traffic today due to deep potholes at Mallam Junction.
The potholes, some nearly a foot deep, have caused vehicles to slow down drastically, creating a traffic jam that stretches from Weija to Mallam and beyond. What should be a 3-minute drive from Weija Junction to Mallam Overpass is now taking over 2 hours.
Commercial drivers have increased fares, and workers are reporting late to work. Many vehicles have developed faults after falling into the potholes.
The situation has caught the attention of the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, who has officially written to the Minister for Roads and Highways to urgently repair the Weija Junction to Mallam Overpass stretch. He says the road is of national importance and its deterioration is affecting economic activities.
Motorists are calling on the Ghana Highway Authority to patch the potholes as a temporary measure while awaiting full reconstruction.
4. SECURITY SWOOP AT KASOA-TUBA – 32 NIGERIANS ARRESTED OVER SUSPECTED CYBERCRIME
In a major security operation, the Cyber Security Authority in collaboration with National Security has arrested 32 Nigerian nationals at Kasoa-Tuba in the early hours of today.
The suspects were arrested in a house suspected to be used as a hub for cybercrime, popularly known as Sakawa or Yahoo Yahoo. Items seized include 31 laptops, 15 smartphones, and other electronic gadgets.
The operation was intelligence-led after months of surveillance. The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing screening. They will be profiled and if found culpable, will be prosecuted according to Ghana’s Cybersecurity Act.
Residents of Tuba have praised the security agencies for the swift action, saying the activities of suspected fraudsters have been a concern in the area.
CONCLUSION
Today in Kasoa has been a mix of tragedy, appeal for justice, infrastructure challenge, and security success. As the day progresses, Kasoa News will continue to monitor the fire scene at High Tension, the police response to the accident victim’s family, the traffic situation at Mallam, and the cybercrime arrests.
