Kennedy Agyapong’s Team Shuts Down Viral NPP Exit Rumours – “He’s Still NPP, He’s in China”

The camp of former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has strongly dismissed viral reports circulating on social media that he has resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The rumours, which started trending on Friday, October 16, 2026, claimed that Kennedy Agyapong had submitted a resignation letter to the National Chairman of the NPP, John Boadu, and was planning to quit the party.

One of the viral posts by a page known as THE STATE NEWS on X (formerly Twitter) said: “BREAKING — Kennedy Agyapong Resigns from NPP. Kennedy Agyapong shocks party as he submits resignation letter to National Chairman John Boadu.”

The post quickly went viral on Facebook, WhatsApp and X, with many NPP supporters expressing shock and confusion.

But in a swift response, the spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s political team, Kwasi Kwarteng, Esq., has described the report as completely false and asked the public to ignore it.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Kwasi Kwarteng said Kennedy Agyapong is not even in Ghana at the moment.

“Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong is currently in China conducting business. He’s not submitted any letter of resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to anyone. Please disregard any such report,” Kwasi Kwarteng wrote.

According to his team, the former flagbearer hopeful has not written any letter, has not met any party executive to resign, and has no plans to leave the NPP.

This is not the first time such rumours have come up.

Since Kennedy Agyapong lost the NPP presidential primary on January 31, 2026, to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, there have been several reports claiming he will leave the NPP.

In that primary, Dr. Bawumia won with 110,643 votes representing 56.48%, while Kennedy Agyapong came second with 46,554 votes representing 23.76% of valid votes cast.

After the defeat, Kennedy Agyapong told his supporters to remain calm and not see the loss as the end of their political journey. He pledged to stay in the party and support its rebuilding after the NPP lost the 2024 general elections to the NDC.

However, tensions grew in recent months after Kennedy Agyapong made some strong public comments criticizing aspects of the NPP’s record while in government. His comments included allegations about contracts awarded under the previous NPP administration and criticism of some party leaders who he believes contributed to the party’s defeat.

His comments did not go down well with some party members. Some Members of Parliament and party executives reportedly petitioned the party’s disciplinary committee to take action against him, which further fueled rumours that he was being pushed out of the party.

There were also rumours linking Kennedy Agyapong to a new political movement called The Base Movement, which was launched in April 2026 by businessman Dr. George Oti Bonsu to promote youth participation in politics. Some social media users claimed Agyapong would lead the movement as a third force outside NPP and NDC.

But that claim has also been denied several times.

NPP Communications Director Richard Ahiagbah earlier said Kennedy Agyapong is not interested in leading any political organization outside the NPP. And former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko recently said Agyapong personally told him that the Base Movement rumours are false.

The latest denial by Kwasi Kwarteng has put to rest — at least for now — the claims that Kennedy Agyapong has dumped the NPP.

Political analysts say the rumours keep coming because Kennedy Agyapong remains one of the most popular and outspoken figures in the NPP, with a huge grassroots following, especially among the youth.

Many of his supporters were disappointed after the January primary and have been calling on the party leadership to give him a bigger role ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The NPP is currently in opposition and trying to reorganize itself after its defeat in the 2024 elections. Party insiders say unity is key if the party wants to win back power in 2028 with Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer.

That is why any rumour about Kennedy Agyapong leaving the party causes panic within the party base.

As it stands, according to his own team, Kennedy Agyapong is still a fully committed member of the New Patriotic Party. He is in China on business and has not resigned.

Ghanaians are therefore being advised to ignore the viral posts and wait for official communication from Kennedy Agyapong himself if there is any major decision about his political future.
