Earlier on Thursday, March 13th, it was announced that President John Dramani Mahama had relieved the IGP from his post.
In his stead, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno was named the new IGP. A swearing-in ceremony for the new IGP is slated for Friday, March 14th.
A debate has been raging for weeks in Ghana over the fate of Dampare, with some calling for him to be maintained for doing a good job while others fought for his removal.
The policy think tank, IMANI Ghana fought for Dampare to be kept on, and with news of his impending dismissal, dragged the President to court.
In a writ filed at the Supreme Court, the plaintiffs are seeking for an injunction to prevent Mahama from removing Dampare from office. They argue that the IGP and other heads of security services should not be removed unless they are found to have engaged in misconduct.
The plaintiffs prayed the court to order the President to refrain from changing Dampare until the substantive case has been heard. The Supreme Court, meanwhile, postponed the case and gave the Attorney General seven days to respond.
