You Are Out Of Order – Alban Bagbin Tells Akufo Addo In Parliament
A moment of tension unfolded during today’s State of the Nation Address in Parliament when Speaker Alban Bagbin intervened to remind President Akufo-Addo that he was out of order.
The incident occurred as the President delivered his speech, with loud interruptions from the minority caucus, who expressed disagreement with some of his statements.
As the minority MPs continued to protest, Speaker Bagbin stepped in to address the disruption.
He reminded the Members of Parliament that while their statistics may differ from those presented by the President, it did not mean the President was misleading the house. “Honorable Members, your statistics may differ from his, but that doesn’t mean he is misleading the house. He is in order,” Bagbin stated firmly.
The President, unphased by the interruptions, responded, asserting that there could only be one set of statistics—the ones he was presenting. He emphasized that truth was indivisible, and the figures he was reading were accurate.
“Mr. Speaker, the statistics cannot be different. There is only one set of statistics, and it cannot be different. Truth is indivisible. It’s one and only,” Akufo-Addo said.
However, Speaker Bagbin, known for his wit, humorously reminded the President that he was out of order.
“Your Excellency, as an accomplished member of Parliament, you are out of order,” he remarked, which brought some light-heartedness to the moment.
Despite the exchange, the President continued with the address, which covered a wide range of issues, including economic growth, infrastructure development, social interventions, and security.
Among the key points discussed were the success of the Free Senior High School policy, which has benefitted over 5.7 million students, and various infrastructure projects, including the completion of six interchanges.
