A statement from the Presidency issued Sunday, March 30, revealed Opoku suffered a ‘sudden illness’ after work on Friday, March 28, and visited the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday for treatment.
The statement, signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, added that due to ‘expert medical opinion’, the Veep will be flown abroad to receive further treatment.
The statement read: “The Vice President, Her Excellency Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, received treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on Saturday due to a sudden illness that occurred after work on Friday, March 28, 2025,”
It concluded: “Based on expert medical opinion, she will be seeking further care abroad. We wish the Vice President a speedy recovery,”
The news has raised questions about the country’s healthcare system, with Ghanaians angry over how politicians quickly fly abroad when they have a medical emergency while leaving Ghanaians to the fate of our crumbling medical system.
The NDC government has also faced charges of hypocrisy for lambasting former government officials who travelled abroad to seek medical care.
