Reports of a jumper at University Avenue Bridge started emerging Friday afternoon. The individual reportedly committed su*c*de by jumping to their deaths off the Richard P. Howe Bridge.
According to reports, the incident occurred shortly after 11:10 a.m. Emergency crews including Lowell Fire Department, the Lowell Police, and UMass Lowell Police, were all on site but could not rescue the individual.
University authorities confirmed the deceased was a student in an email blast to the UMass Lowell Community.
“This morning at approximately 10:40 a.m., UMass Lowell police, along with police and fire crews from the city of Lowell, responded to a report of a student in the Merrimack River near the Howe Bridge at University Avenue. Tragically the student did not survive, and the Lowell Police Department notified the student’s family this afternoon,” the email read.

“The incident was witnessed by a number of pedestrians, including UMass Lowell community members who routinely cross the bridge connecting North Campus with East Campus and University Crossing,”
The student was a freshman from Lowell studying computer science, according to the email. UMass Lowell extended its condolences to the student’s family and announced the provision of mental health resources for those seeking it in the wake of the tragedy.
