The student, identified as Osei Parker Darren Hazekia, was arrested with over 19.4 kilos of a high-grade strain of cannabis informally known as ‘loud’, while attempting to transit through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Abuja.
NDLEA officers discovered the University of East London Computer Science student’s stash while carrying out routine screening of passengers arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, on Ethiopian Airlines.
A search carried out in his luggage uncovered the drugs, which were concealed in the lining of his ‘oversized travel bag’, according to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi. The drugs weighed nearly 20 kilos. No street value was assigned to them by the NDLEA spokesperson.
Parker reportedly told authorities he left the UK for Bangkok where he took delivery of the drugs and was supposed to hand them off to another contact in Nigeria. The Ghanaian faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted.
