Sad News Hit Galamsey Sponsors As President Akufo-Addo Makes A Huge Move
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed the Minister for Defence to deploy additional military forces to bolster the ongoing fight against illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.” This directive is aimed at intensifying the government’s “Operation Halt,” which seeks to curb the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities across the country.
In conjunction with this effort, President Akufo-Addo has also ordered the Ministry of the Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, along with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to immediately suspend the enforcement of L.I 2462, a regulation that permits mining in forest reserves. This action follows a meeting with Organised Labour on October 8, during which the group threatened a nationwide strike on October 10 if the government did not take decisive steps against galamsey.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Presidency on October 9, the President outlined several measures to address the concerns raised by Organised Labour. Chief among these is the directive for the Defence Minister to increase the military presence in key mining areas. Additionally, the operation will be strengthened through the deployment of naval boats on polluted rivers to ensure that all mining activities, both legal and illegal, are halted in and around these water bodies.
In a further step to enhance the fight against illegal mining, President Akufo-Addo has instructed the Attorney General to work closely with the Chief Justice to expand the number of courts handling illegal mining cases. This move is intended to expedite legal actions against offenders and ensure that justice is swiftly served.
The government has also urged presidential candidates and political parties to sign a pact, committing themselves to the nationwide effort to combat galamsey. This is seen as a way to unify political forces in addressing the environmental crisis posed by illegal mining.
