New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Tolon and Deputy Majority Chip Whip, Alhaji Habib Iddrisu, has stated that even though it is a foregone conclusion that John Mahama will win the flagbearership race of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) overwhelmingly, he will be beaten in the 2024 presidential election by Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who, by extension, he thinks, will win the flagbearership position of the governing NPP.

Commenting on the upcoming flagbearership race of the NDC on Multimedia’s news analysis programme Newsfile on Saturday, February 25, 2023, Alhaji Habib agreed with co-panelists on the show that John Mahama was the presumptive flagbearer of the NDC and anyone contesting him had no chance at all.

He however added that John Mahama’s quest to win back the Presidency will come to naught since he will be beaten with cheeky ease by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the presidential race of 2024.
I think that the three others competing with former President John Mahama are just to register their presence.
He will not win anything less than 95%. So we wish him well…I don’t expect former President Mahama to win less than 95 percent of the vote. I don’t expect that.
Within the NDC, he is popular but he is going to be the easiest candidate for Dr Bawumia to beat[ in the 2024 Presidential Election],” he asserte
Three others in the NDC have picked nomination forms to contest John Mahama for the torchbearer position. They are the Former Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Kwabena Duffuor; former Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi Kojo Bonsu and one Ernest Kobeah of the NDC Gbawe Constituency.

In the NPP race, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia faces competition from former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyeremanten, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and several others. Dr Bawumia and Alan Kyeremanten are considered the frontrunners
