President-Elect John Mahama Sends Urgent Message to Senior High School Headmasters
President-Elect John Dramani Mahama has issued a heartfelt message to headmasters of Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the nation, urging them to voice their concerns about the challenges facing their schools. Speaking during an interview in his office, Mahama pledged to create an open and collaborative environment for addressing issues in the education sector.
“I want to use this opportunity to tell all the headmasters of the secondary schools that they are free to talk now,” Mahama emphasized. “Feel free to tell me the issues you are confronting in the schools so that together we can find solutions to the challenges we are facing in our education sector.”
This statement comes at a critical time when the education system has been under scrutiny, particularly regarding the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy introduced by the outgoing administration. While the initiative has increased enrollment significantly, it has also been criticized for resource constraints, overcrowded classrooms, and inadequate funding for schools.
Many educators have reportedly felt unable to express their concerns openly under the current administration for fear of repercussions. Mahama’s assurance signals a potential shift in leadership style, aiming to foster transparency and collaboration between government and educational stakeholders.
“It’s either you speak of the challenges you are facing in the school and lose your job or keep quiet and suffer,” a headmaster, speaking anonymously, stated about the perceived restrictions during the Akufo-Addo administration.
Mahama’s promise of a more inclusive approach has been welcomed by some educators and parents who believe that open dialogue is essential for resolving the systemic issues plaguing the sector.
He reaffirmed that his administration, which officially begins on January 7th, will be “totally different” from what headmasters have experienced under the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
As the education community awaits tangible action, many hope that this renewed commitment to engagement will lead to improved conditions for both students and teachers.
The President-Elect’s call for candid discussions underscores his recognition of the vital role education plays in shaping Ghana’s future.
