In a recent Adom FM interview, A Plus claimed since the 2024 election in which the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost, their operatives have intensified their mining activities, particularly in forest areas, to make the new government look bad.
“Ever since the NDC won power, [NPP] decided to intensify their galamsey efforts to disgrace John Mahama,” Kwame A Plus said, speaking in Akan. “NPP operatives are the only people still engaged in galamsey in this country…it is a deliberate plot to sabotage the GOLDBOD initiative,”
Illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, was a big issue in the 2024 elections and helped propel the NDC to power. The menace, which exploded under the NPP government led to the pollution of multiple rivers and sparked a youth-led social movement against it. The previous government remained deaf to the pleas of protestors, who were brutalized and jailed for their activism.
The NDC won power with a mandate to fix a myriad of the previous government’s problems, including galamsey. However, the menace appears stronger than ever with no end in sight.
