Following his election into Parliament, Dumelo was appointed as the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture by President John Dramani Mahama. He is married with two children.
Education
John Dumelo was born to parents John Dumelo Sr, a civil engineer, and Antoinette Dumelo, a customs officer. Dumelo lost his mother a year before being elected MP. His father died in January 2025 – weeks after his December 7, 2024, victory but before his official swearing-in on January 7, 2025.
Dumelo started his acting career as a child, appearing in the movie ‘Baby Thief’ and others. He attended Christ the King International School in Accra for his primary education before enrolling at the famous Achimota School. He proceeded to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he studied Civil Engineering, following in his father’s footsteps.
Later in life, Dumelo earned two master’s degrees, one in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and another in Natural Resources Law from the University of Ghana Law School.

Acting
After his childhood career, Dumelo returned to acting in 2008, appearing as the titular monarch in ‘The King is Mine’. He went on to appear in several blockbusters across Ghana and Nigeria, including The Game, A Northern Affair, Amakye and Dede, A Private Storm, Hearts of Men, The Perfect Picture, and more.
Farming
Aside from acting, Dumelo also ventured into farming. He has a farm with over 100 employees, engaging in both crop and animal farming. Dumelo has long encouraged young Ghanaians to venture into farming, describing it as a path to financial freedom. He often shares farming tips on his social media handles. Dumelo is also known for advocating for the legalisation of marijuana in Ghana.
Politics
John Dumelo started his political career when he heavily campaigned for the then-ruling National Democratic Congress in the 2016 general elections, which the party lost to the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dumelo first stood for elected office after winning the NDC primaries to become the party’s parliamentary candidate in the 2020 election in the Ayawaso West-Wuogon constituency. He lost to the NPP’s Lydia Alhassan, who was the incumbent MP for the constituency. Dumelo polled 37,478 votes, representing 48.30% of the total valid votes cast, while Alhassan polled 39,851 votes, representing 51.36% of the total valid votes cast.

In a highly anticipated 2024 rematch, Dumelo snatched the seat from Alhassan in a blowout, receiving 40,561 votes out of the total valid votes cast, representing 59.70%. Alhassan received 27,377 votes, representing 40% of the total valid votes cast.
On March 13, 2025, Dumelo was sworn in as Ghana’s new Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture.
Family
John Dumelo married Gifty Mawunya Nkornu in May 2019. The couple welcomed their first child, a boy, on October 16, 2018. They welcomed their second child, a daughter, on June 10, 2021.
