Bagbin, during a diplomatic visit to Ghanaian communities in Cote d’Ivoire last week, expressed his disapproval, emphasizing that leadership should be about setting good examples. “When you are alive, it is not advisable to build a statue for yourself. When you are no more, the people who admire what you have done will build one for you,” he remarked.
The statue, unveiled in November 2024, quickly sparked widespread public backlash, with many Ghanaians questioning its relevance in light of the Western Region’s developmental challenges. Critics argued that the Akufo-Addo administration had made minimal contributions to the region, making the statue an affront to their struggles.
The controversy took a dramatic turn on January 13, 2025, when unknown individuals vandalized and destroyed the statue. Bagbin also warned against actions that could promote moral decay, stating, “Don’t sow evil; if you sow evil, you will reap it. Leadership is about setting the best example for others to follow.”
