Ghanaians have begun to question Hughton’s competence following the national team’s recent 2-0 loss to Mexico and a demoralising 4-0 defeat against the USA.
In the match against Mexico, two second-half goals secured victory for the opposition. Despite promising an improved performance, the Black Stars were notably underwhelming on Tuesday night, conceding four goals in just 45 minutes to the USA.
Following the disappointing USA match, the former Brighton coach, who took up the role of Ghana coach in February this year, reportedly delayed his post-match press conference to engage in an extended discussion with the players in the dressing room.
During the press conference, one of the first questions posed to him was whether he felt he was the right person for the Ghana job. Hughton’s response was affirmative, saying, “If you ask me if I feel like I’m the right person for this job, the answer is yes.”
Prior to this month, Hughton had maintained an unbeaten record as Ghana’s coach. However, critics argued that the team had not encountered serious challenges in those six games.
The defeats to Mexico and the USA revealed vulnerabilities, as Ghana were unable to produce a single shot on target against Mexico and managed only two against the USA.
Hughton is now shifting his focus to November when the Black Stars have two crucial games against Madagascar and Comoros as the 2026 World Cup qualifiers commence.
