After the recent cyberstalking documentary Can I Tell You a Secret, Google searches for “cyberstalking” have risen by 8400%, and searches for “phone been hacked” are up by 208%.
Tracking apps are legal because they are intended for concerned parents keeping an eye on their kids’ whereabouts or online activities, or businesses tracking company device usage – but these apps can be used for more sinister purposes.
Some are even marketed as “girlfriend spy apps”, and boast features like phone call recording, access to deleted messages, ‘discreet real-time social media monitoring’, and even remote control features to film surroundings without the victim knowing. AI Jobs founder Rob Phelps reveals how to tell if someone is spying on your devices or using AI to track you – and how to stop it.
HOW DOES SPYWARE GET ONTO MY DEVICES?
Device-spying can be very hard to detect and can go completely unnoticed, and isn’t always as simple as deleting an app you don’t remember downloading or changing your passwords.
People can spy on your devices either with physical access, to snoop while you’re asleep for example, or spyware can be downloaded to your device for remote access. Like clicking on a dodgy link in a spam email and getting a virus on your laptop, spyware can be downloaded
Spyware can be automatically and invisibly downloaded to your device by clicking on a link; this can come from a dodgy link in a scam email, or can be someone you know sending you a link to an ‘interesting article’.
AI is also making reverse image search technology more advanced.
Instead of just being able to see if photos you’ve posted online are being used to catfish someone, people are able to take a photo of someone on the street and reverse image search it to find every instance of their face online, which they can use to track them down.
