“God chooses leaders, not you” – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo
Former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emphasized that the power to determine President Akufo-Addo’s successor in the upcoming elections does not lie with the incumbent President.
Addressing attendees at the Gonja Land Youth Congress in Damongo, Mr. Mahama stressed that according to him, it is ultimately God who selects leaders, not President Akufo-Addo.
“The best legacy he can leave this country is to oversee a peaceful, transparent, and credible election,” he stated during the event, where he also launched the construction of a multipurpose Jakpa Palace in Damongo.
These remarks from Mahama come in response to President Akufo-Addo’s repeated declaration that he does not intend for Mahama to succeed him after his term ends in 2025.
President Akufo-Addo, during a visit to Wa, expressed gratitude to the chiefs and residents for their support during his tenure.
He also mentioned his intention to revisit the region with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, whom he envisions as his successor.
However, Akufo-Addo made it clear that he does not plan to pass the baton to John Dramani Mahama, whom he defeated and removed from office in 2016.
“Our country is recognized as a trailblazer for democratic governance throughout the African continent. I assure you that this year, we will uphold that reputation. But I need your support and cooperation,” Akufo-Addo asserted.
Despite his firm stance on the matter of succession, President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring peace before, during, and after the December elections.
