Former Ghanaian President “John Mahama” Picks Woman as Running Mate.
Assuming there are no last-minute alterations, John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, is poised to announce Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election on December 7, 2024.
Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who previously served as the Minister of Education during John Mahama’s presidency from January 7, 2013, to January 7, 2017, also held the position of his running mate in the unsuccessful attempt to secure re-election in the 2020 general election.
If confirmed, it will mark the second instance in the NDC’s history where the same individual has been chosen as the running mate for consecutive elections.
This contrasts with the historical precedent set by former President Jerry John Rawlings, who had different running mates in each of his two terms, and Professor John Evans Atta-Mills, who ran with three different running mates in successive elections.
In the 2012 election, John Mahama successfully ran with Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, and they won. However, they lost in the 2016 election.
In 2020, following Amissah-Arthur’s death in June 2018, Mahama chose Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate, resulting in another electoral defeat.
The party had shortlisted potential running mates from three regions – Ashanti, Central, and Eastern – with Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang emerging as the preferred candidate from the Central Region.
Although other notable figures like Julius Debrah from the Eastern Region and Kwame Awuah-Darko from the Ashanti Region were considered, the potential repetition of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate has raised concerns among some NDC members.

They believe that her previous nomination in 2020 did not contribute to the party’s success in the Central Region or nationally, and they are skeptical about the potential political benefits or improvements in the party’s prospects in the upcoming December 2024 general election.
