Powell, who operates the world-renowned Powell fitness gym in Greensboro, passed in the morning of Sunday, January 5, 2025, according to the Masters Fitness Championship, who among others, announced the loss.

William Powell was a 3 time CrossFit Games Champion. His wins came in 2014, 2015 and 2016. A year after his 2016 triumph, he was diagnosed with a tumor on his left lung. He had it removed and returned to competition, winning the Fittest on Earth title in 2021.
Powell took his talents to training others, opening the Powell Fitness and Wellness Studio in Greensboro, where he resided. The Lockhart native helped hundreds if not more on their fitness and weight loss journeys and often received rave reviews for his service.
The late fitness guru was married to Terry Powell. His immense impact was remembered by many, who praised his resilience through numerous health battles and highlighted his influence on many through his mentorship of many in their fitness journeys.

He was kind, generous, humble, inspiring, a talented athlete, teacher/coach, and role model for so many,” said OCB Natural bodybuilding, the largest natural bodybuilding federation in the United States. “He was incredibly devoted to natural bodybuilding and loyal to the OCB mission of promoting drug free bodybuilding,”
