In a candid interview with Echo Room aired on Wednesday, the “Who’s Your Guy” hitmaker shared the struggles he has encountered since embracing the “Jesus boy” brand. Spyro revealed that his strong declaration of faith has led to considerable criticism, admitting, “My biggest challenge in the music industry right now is discrimination. I came out with the ‘Jesus Boy’ brand, and I’ve faced the biggest criticisms. It’s hard.”
He also expressed his frustration over the lack of media support and recognition for his work. “If you want to be truthful, how many media moguls support or post about me when I drop songs? You see them posting other artists. Aside from the blogs I pay, how many of them post me?” Spyro questioned. “Sometimes, I wonder why. People who aren’t doing as well as I am get more attention. The answer is simple: once you publicly declare Christ, you enter a battle. It’s like the entire system is set up to pull you down.”
Spyro also shared advice he received from fellow artist Bankole Wellington, aka Banky W, who warned him about the challenges that come with choosing a godly path in the industry. “Banky W told me, ‘My major problem in the industry started immediately after I said Jesus Christ is Lord.’ He told me to be sure that I was ready for this. When he was living a different lifestyle, everything was fine, but once he decided to take a godly path, his battle began.”
In his reflections, Spyro acknowledged that the industry often favors artists who conform to specific trends and lifestyles. “If I smoke Igbo today, I would automatically be accepted into a certain circle, where everyone would vibe with me,” he said, highlighting the pressure to fit in.
Despite these challenges, Spyro remains committed to his faith and his music, determined to stay true to himself in the face of adversity.
