According to police, the shooter, a 17-year-old male, arrived at the school on a bus and later pulled out a pistol, firing multiple shots. A 16-year-old Hispanic female was fatally shot and later pronounced dead at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Another student, a 17-year-old female, suffered a grazing wound to the arm and is reported to be in stable condition. The shooter then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life.
Antioch High School, which serves approximately 2,200 students speaking 41 languages and offers STEM programs and an international baccalaureate curriculum, was placed on lockdown. Students were transported by bus to Ascension St. Thomas Hospital, located at 3754 Murfreesboro Road, to be reunited with their parents.
This shooting comes nearly two years after the fatal attack at The Covenant School in Nashville, where three 9-year-old students and three staff members were killed before police intervened and stopped the shooter. It also follows another recent shooting on Nashville’s historic Jefferson Street, which left a 24-year-old man dead and injured six adults and three teenagers.
